Leanne Marshall Opens a Portal to a Tropical Oasis during NYFW

In Fashion Week by Patrick Hovan

Returning to Gallery Two at Skylight Clarkson Square, I was honored once more to be backstage to cover the ethereal Leanne Marshall for the 3rd season in a row. Leanne exudes this presence of otherworldly proportion. Having documented and photographed my team members interviewing her backstage, it is always an honor to hear her inspiration in her own words. Having already been a fan of Leanne, I was very excited to see what she had waiting for us this spring summer 2018 season.

Leanne explained that even though at first she thought it was ridiculous, Her main inspiration came to her while wandering the city and walking through a construction site. Now, if you know New York City, or any major city for that matter, you are very familiar with the green construction walls with the diamond shape windows. These walls often have the classic saying “post no bills” spray painted on them. Leanne goes on to explain, “[I imagined] on the other side of this wall was some kind of secret tropical oasis.” She explained to Fashion Mingle interviewer, Jessica Faith Marshall, that is was looking through the windows with the thought of them transporting you to an alternate dimension that inspired her SS18 collection. With fall fast approaching and winter not to far behind, The idea of transporting to a tropical oasis and escaping not only the cold months to come, but also the craziness and endless hustle of the city.

As the lights dimmed as a clear sign that the show was about to start, this idea of a tropical oasis was very evident as the models began to make their way down the runway. The collection started out with a direct inspiration to those classic green walls with garments such as dresses, gowns, jumpsuits, and blouses all in the color palette of green. As the collection continued the color palette began to reflect this tropical oasis Leanne spoke of backstage. Dresses of yellow and pink flowed gracefully down the runway, I even overheard a fellow photographer next to me express that the models appeared to be floating. The whole aura of this parallel or alternate reality that one can just step through a window on the street was more alive than ever. Each piece presented in this collection was finished off with shoes provided by OCEEDEE India, as well as hair and makeup perfectly done by the returning Aveda team.

Each season I personally look forward to Leanne Marshall’s new collection. Leanne has a certain otherworldly charm and her designs as well as the presentation of those designs are always so captivating. On behalf of myself and the Fashion Mingle team I have to say thank you to Leanne and her team as well as the Riviere Agency team for having us back for the spring summer 2018 runway collection of the always admirable Leanne Marshall. This season was no exception to prove to me as well as others that Leanne Marshall is always an exciting and popular show during New York Fashion Week.
