The Miami Fashion Institute at Miami Dade College is one of the top fashion schools in South Florida. This 280 person program is two years, catering to both fashion and fashion merchandising students.
Meet Marcus King
Marcus King graduated this past spring from the program and plans on continuing studying fashion at a university. One of his favorite aspects of the program was how small and tight knit it was. He described it as “community centered” and the environment made it “very easy to make friends, connect with people, and share ideas.” Unfortunately, COVID-19 cut his second year short. He explained that his final collection, along with the rest of his classmates, had to be displayed on video chat with his teachers instead of at the normal student fashion show during Miami Fashion Week.
Marcus King’s Spring Collection Designs
Program chairperson, Asanyah Davidson explained that it’s the only accredited fashion program in Miami at this point in time. The two year program has articulation agreements with top design schools like FIT in New York, LIM College in New York, FIDM in California, and even schools overseas in Spain. Students have the opportunity to go to one of these schools after their two year education with the Fashion Institute in pursuit of their bachelors. They even have an internship program in the last semester to ensure students get hands-on experience working with a company, usually allowing them to get employment offers. COVID-19 interfered this year, but she explained that they usually participate as part of Miami Fashion Week. After students finish their spring collection as part of their collection class, a jury made up of industry professionals and the advisor board, including top designers like Barbara Hulanicki, will judge student designs based on multiple aspects. The top students are invited to showcase their collection in Fashion Week.
