Fashion Flashback: 2000’s Fashion

In Student Mingle, Style & Beauty by Kyah Welton

As the saying goes, “Time repeats itself”, but in fashion, many styles and trends from previous decades always come back around. 2020 has been a year of many things, but the fashion center point has focused on the many key statement pieces and accessories from 2000’s fashion.

The Outfits

The outfits from this spontaneous decade ranged from owning a signature Juicy Couture tracksuit to even wearing low rise jeans to every casual event. So many bold choices were made but it left such a cultural impact on today’s fashion as well. One major brand that was a staple piece of the glittery Y2K years was Baby Phat. Kimora Lee was the clothing director of the brand. She was able to provide many pieces fitted that were suitable for all body types while also being cost-friendly and high end. Playboy, aside from being a very promiscuous brand, was also the heart of the early 2000’s fashion, due to its infamous bunny logo. The bunny logo was a logo seen amongst many celebrities streetwear looks and even became a costume of choice at the time due to its popularity. Von Dutch was also another fashion trend that took over by storm. Von Dutch isn’t what you think of when it comes to fashion but the trucker inspired look had many heads turning with the questionable yet cute dad hats.

The Accessories

The accessories from this time went from butterfly clips to sparkly belts. Yet, the most notable accessories were lipglosses, designer shades, and bucket hats. Lipgloss is related to makeup but in the Y2K era, it was a pivotal accessory to have. Glossy lips not only add glimmer to an outfit but they were also a statement makeup look. Tinted designer shades and bucket hats were an odd collection but gave every outfit at the time a chic, yet classy touch on what was on-trend at the time.
