Erin Fetherston Spring 2016 Collection Ushers in a Victorian Appeal

In Behind-the-Scenes, Fashion Designers, Fashion Week by Brandy Thomas

The kick-off to New York Fashion Week is always filled with huge excitement and anticipation, the feeling of attending on the very first day of NYFW could be described as how you feel earning your very first paycheck or collecting on a winning lottery ticket. To be completely honest, I was even more excited to attend the New York Fashion Week Spring 2016 collections this season due to the new venue changes, which in my mind would be absolutely mind-blowing, well unfortunately my mind was not blown.

As I walked up to the Skylight Moynihan Station, I’m realizing that the fashion show venue is connected to a post office, I’m not sure about you, but anything connected to a post office can be seen as somewhat undesirable. As I arrive at the front door, I’m greeted by a young woman who is responsible for preparing people to check in with their tickets. Clearly there was some confusion with the process and complications ensued, but eventually we all got in.

So. I’m all checked in and I’m ready to go! Not knowing a lot about fashion designer Erin Fetherston, whose fashions are sold at upscale department stores such as Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, and Lord & Taylor, I must admit my curiosity hit its peak as soon as I entered The Dock area inside the Skylight at Moynihan Station, I immediately was impressed with the selection of trendy music, a mash up of Drake and plenty of jazz melodies to set the proper mood for a runway collection.

As the runway show starts, and the models walk down the stage, they are dressed in an array of flowing, delicate dresses that makes you eager for Spring before Fall even begins. I’m always impressed with how models never break character, and these models did not disappoint. The models were amazing and their hairstyles were flirty and fun as well.

I must be honest, I was expecting more looks and bit of a longer show being that it was an IMG fashion showcase at a main venue, but the show ended too quickly and was bittersweet as the designer came out to thank the crowd with a gracious wave.

Overall, I liked the collection which reflected her signature feminine, whimsical and romantic style. Fetherston’s palette of earthy pastels and Victorian whites used embroidered tulle, organza, and fluid silks to create dresses for Spring that appeared lighter than air. Is her S/S 2016 Collection worth purchasing? But of course! How you can deny a designer who likes Drake?

One thing that’s very different about an off site venue compared to The Tents at Lincoln Center, is that there is no lounge, no complimentary drinks, they just shove you in a queue for the show, and as soon as the show is over, they kick you out right away! I left with a feeling of disconnect, from the lack of opportunity to network with other members of the fashion community or even a chance to speak with others about their opinions about the show we just experienced.

Overall, I’d have to say that IMG has succeeded in creating a more subdued event that lacked the excitement I experienced at Lincoln Center which did not do justice for the debut of Erin Fetherston’s Spring/Summer 2016 Collection.
