NYFW Fall/Winter 2016 DAY 1 TREND REPORT

In Daily Reports, Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing, Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week by Shalanda Turner

Welcome to New York Fashion Week coverage, Fashion Mingle Style! NYFW officially kicked off yesterday, Thursday, February 11th with all of its changes. This is the second season of NYFW since the changes in the Fall have been implemented.  As a refresher from last Fall, there are three venues that will house designer shows that are associated with New York Fashion Week: Skylight Monyihan Station, MADE at Milk Studios, Skylight Clarkson Square. Our team is on the scene checking out all of the shows.

Nicholas K, Kye, Marissa Webb, Creatures of the Wind

Marissa Webb’s collection was slightly reminiscent of Michael Kors’ boho collection a few seasons ago with loose fitting silhouettes, and floral patterns. I was happy to see the window pane print staying strong, as it’s a flattering print for all body shapes, and a refreshing change from traditional plaid. Marissa’s collection was mostly grey, white and black but there were a couple rich hues of orange and a blush shade.

Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters took a unique spin on menswear for women by combining button down tops with feminine silhouettes. By opening up the sleeves of the popular menswear staple they served more as capes. Their collection also featured high necklines, mixed prints, rich electric blues, and bold burgundy lips.

NICHOLAS K
While I love the grungy, nomad style of Nicholas K, it is hard to distinguish their collections from season to season. However, this year, they mixed in some softer, silk fabrics and a hue of purple that was definitely memorial on the runway! Leather abounds in the collection from headwear to wrap belts.

I’m not too familiar with the brand Kye. Kathleen Hanhee Kyeearned, is the designer and her first show was during London Fashion Week S/S 2011. Her collection is definitely colorful, and featured unique hair styling on the models. Her collection has a young, almost school-age feel to it, and would be fun for young people looking to express themselves in bold and “be noticed” ways. Pairing Maxi dresses with T-shirts, tennis shoes with the off-the-shoulder tops, and fishnets stockers were just some of the flavor of the day.
